Way back when the winter Olympics were last in town, an English seasonnaire, Lulu and her French ski instructor friend Eric, realised that the English speaking clientele of Meribel, whilst enjoying great holidays, were not getting what they needed from the existing establishment of “follow me and bend ze knees” type of ski school.

There and then (1992 for you youngsters), they set up the first Magic, an independent snowsports school, with a mission to pass on their passion for the mountains and it’s different sports. The idea was fun but professional lessons taught in English in small groups and private lessons.

Another “Academy”, followed in Courchevel soon after, and over the following 16 seasons Magic Academy has set the standard for schools catering for English speaking skiers and boarders in Meribel, Courchevel, La Tania and Val d’Isere.

Our team is a delightfully mixed bunch of characters. French, British and much further afield… we have the advantage of being able learn from each other and pick out the best teaching techniques available.

Our instructing team are of course chosen for their teaching, motivational and communication skills (rather than just their skiing ability, which goes without saying).

As a result of the merger of Magic in Motion and Ski Academy last season we are able to offer the friendliness of a small team with the flexibility of a much larger one.

Each resort has technical director who looks after matters on the slopes and is supported by an admistrative team. Generally any commercial/PR/quality control/client relationship issues are looked after by Lulu Cottle (a founder director or Magic in Motion) and Sam Langley (commercial manager of Ski Academy).

With almost all of our lessons taught in English it helps that approximately a third of our team are native English speaking, (giving us more Brits than all the “British” schools!). For the rest teaching in English nearly 7 hours a day everyday means their English is of a very high level.

In fact at the end of this season when our instructors' English was individually assessed by a language institute using an internationally recognised standard we obtained the best results in the area. We are proud to say that instructor pupil communication is good and that you should get a fair sized helping of humour thrown in.

On a private lessons basis we can offer a number of other languages for those with special requests, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Czech, Tibetan. During the French school holidays we also offer afternoon groups in French.
